AJM was founded by Dr. Albertus Marais following his tenure as Head of Tax at Titan, the Wiese family’s group. While in this role, he continued advising a select number of clients, which quickly developed into a growing independent practice.

As demand increased, Pieter Janse van Rensburg joined to support both the Titan function and the expanding advisory work. What began as a small, two-person practice evolved into a dedicated firm by 2019, with the addition of
De Wet de Villiers, and Dr. Marais transitioning to focus exclusively on AJM.

Since then, AJM has grown steadily, establishing its headquarters in Cape Town in 2020, and expanding to Johannesburg in 2024, and Windhoek in 2025.

AJM is actively engaged in both local and international tax communities. The firm maintains strong involvement with organisations such as the International Fiscal Association, where Dr. Albertus Marais serves on the South African branch and its Permanent Scientific Committee. De Wet de Villiers also served as Secretary General of the International Fiscal Association for five years. Both Dr. Marais and De Villiers have played a key role in organising the IFA South Africa Congress.

Locally, AJM collaborates with the South African Revenue Service and the South African Institute of Taxation to address administrative and policy-related matters. The firm participates in SAIT’s annual Tax Indaba and contributes to its Tax Administration and Dispute Management Work Group, supporting ongoing dialogue on legislative design and tax practice.

AJM also organises the annual AJM Tax Moot Court at Stellenbosch University, providing BAccLLB students with practical exposure to tax litigation. This forms part of a broader commitment to developing future professionals, with continued support for students at both school and university level.

AJM’s team is built on a strong academic and professional foundation, with a significant number of BAccLLB graduates across its partners, directors, and senior managers.

This deliberate focus on multidisciplinary expertise ensures a depth of legal and technical capability across all engagements. By investing in the right individuals, AJM maintains its position within the global tax advisory space while continuing to develop the next generation of tax specialists.
